QUALIFICTIONS:
Education/Certification:
Valid Texas commercials driver’s license (Class B)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be 18 years of age
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Knowledge of student discipline procedures
Ability to manage student behavior
Ability to operate bus
Experience:
None required.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses and obey all traffic laws. Give students instruction on emergency exit procedures and perform a practice drill.
- Maintain discipline when students are on bus and report all problems to the proper authority.
- Keep bus clean and gas bus on assigned days.
- Keep to assigned schedule.
- Check bus before each operation for mechanical defects and report any mechanical defects or lateness to the proper authority.
- Transport only authorized students and discharge students only at designated stops.
- Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical failures and complete required reports.
- Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
- Keep a list of the bus students and take roll every first Wednesday of the month October through February.
- Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
- Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
Bus Driver
- Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
- Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar and reflectors.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not immediately correctable.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
- Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption and number of passengers transported.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
